How do you achieve that clean, modern look in a bathroom?  What if you want to create the illusion of a larger room? Floating vanity cabinets are the perfect choice for that space-saving, minimalistic look.

This monastic and intimate bathroom unites cool and warm natural tones with a shallow shaker cabinet door style in a light stained White Oak. Dark floor-to-ceiling tiles create a moody look.

What is a Floating Vanity?

Floating bathroom vanities (also known as wall-hung vanities) are specially constructed, shorter base cabinets that appear to ‘float’ on the wall instead of sitting directly on the floor, thus taking up less visual space. This type of wall-hung cabinetry installation is growing in popularity as soft contemporary looks are gaining popularity in kitchen design with homeowners leaning toward clean, simple, sleek designs that are beautiful and amazingly functional.

This master bathroom design features a white painted floating vanity with a pretty flat panel door style. The room has a soft, neutral color palette featuring light gray painted walls, lightly stained wood flooring, white and gray tiles, a white freestanding bathtub.

Proper support and reinforcement is important since the countertop and sink(s) can be heavy, but Dura Supreme’s floating vanities are designed, constructed, and tested to support up to 600 lbs.  By suspending the vanity cabinetry from the wall, the area beneath the cabinetry is revealed creating a modern, open space that’s easy to access and clean.

Create the Illusion of a Larger Bathroom

Bathrooms are typically smaller rooms with minimal windows and square footage. If you’re trying to create a refreshing spa-like environment you might be wishing you had a larger space. If you can’t change the size of your bathroom, you can still make design choices that will make it feel more expansive and luxurious. This is where wall-hung cabinets come in. With floating cabinets, the vanity is lifted up and the entire bathroom floor below is visible creating the illusion of an expanded floor space and a larger room.

Transitional Style Has Embraced Wall-Hung Vanities

The floating vanity is a sought-after look not only for modern and contemporary designs but also for transitional style bathroom designs. In transitional style baths, you may see a floating vanity combined with tall floating linen cabinets or even a long run of floating vanity cabinets paired with traditional floor-mounted tall cabinetry to frame the space.

Floating vanities are a favorite look for small bathrooms to impart an open, airy and expansive feel. For this bath, rich bronze and copper finishes are combined for a stunning effect. A centered sink includes convenient drawers on both sides of the sink for powder room storage, while two wall-hung linen cabinets frame the vanity to create a sleek, symmetric design.

This creates plenty of storage space for towels and linens while also framing the vanity and vanity mirror. This transitional style bath was designed with a “no-frills” look, with the choice of the “Allspice” stained finish and Marley door style creating a more masculine appeal. Copper tiles surrounding the mirror blend beautifully with the cabinetry.

Easy Access, Easy to Clean

With cabinetry suspended off the floor, the bathroom floor is easy to reach and easy to keep clean. It’s also an accessible option for those designing a home for aging-in-place.

Storage Planning for a Floating Vanity

This modern style can be created in several ways depending upon the space available and your storage needs.  Depending on the width of the vanity cabinet, a single wall-hung cabinet can provide space for the sink as well as door or drawer storage.

An open cabinet on a floating vanity offers great storage for hand towels, linens, and misc. bathroom supplies that you’d like displayed for easy use.

Storage space on a wall-hung vanity is condensed because the cabinet is not as tall as a typical floor-standing bath cabinet. That’s why Plumbing Drawers are an excellent storage feature to include. The unique drawer shape optimizes the space under the bathroom sink by adding accessible storage around the plumbing. At Dura Supreme, Plumbing Drawers come standard with both our Floating Bath Vanity and Bath Furniture Collections. Our plumbing drawers, drawers, and roll-outs are available in both solid maple or stainless steel.

Drawers can be optimized with dividers, partitions, or cutlery trays to help organize bathroom supplies and cosmetics.

Floating Vanities with Under-cabinet Lighting

Under-cabinet lighting is a popular feature for floating vanities, due to the inherent ease of install, and need for soft night lighting. This lighting below the floating cabinetry also adds to the “floating” appearance of the console.

Extra Thick Countertops Accent a Floating Vanity

Floating vanities and ultra-thick countertops are two bathroom design trends that go hand-in-hand. A floating vanity is already a beautiful touch of drama and appeal, why not emphasize it with a grand countertop?
